Microsoft recently held its second major launch event of 2024, unveiling a range of exciting new features and improvements across its software solutions. As part of the event, Microsoft also released a series of video tutorials on YouTube to help Business Central users navigate the latest updates. In this blog, we’ll highlight some of the most impactful enhancements to subscription billing software within Business Central, designed to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
What’s New in Subscription Billing Sales Orders?
Managing sales orders just got more customizable and efficient. Business Central now includes expanded capabilities to help businesses keep track of their items seamlessly. One of the standout updates is the ability to differentiate between internal and external vendors within the sales order process.
With this feature, you can now designate which type of maintenance—internal or external—applies to each sales order, ensuring that your data remains accurate and up to date within your ERP. Additionally, service commitments have been integrated into sales orders, allowing businesses to define recurring maintenance services directly within the system. This ensures that ongoing service commitments are properly billed and accounted for.
Assigning Service Commitments to Contracts
Business Central now makes it easier to manage service commitments that lack assigned contracts. From the main ERP dashboard, you’ll receive notifications for any unassigned service commitments.

To resolve these, follow these simple steps:
- Click the notification box for service commitments.
- Navigate to “Assigned to Contract.”
- Choose to either assign the service commitment to an existing contract or create a new contract by selecting “+New.”
- Click “Assign Selected Services”, and the commitment will be linked appropriately.
This small but powerful enhancement helps streamline contract management and keeps your to-do list shorter!
Extending an Existing Contract with New Line Items
If a customer requests additional services, Business Central makes it simple to update their contract—but with a structured process. Instead of manually adding a new line item, users must extend the contract to incorporate the additional services.
Here’s how to do it:
- Open the relevant contract and click “Extend Contract.”
- To view the new entry, navigate to the Recurring Billing page.
- Click on Sales and Purchases > Sales Invoices to see the updated recurring bill appear in the invoices section.
This feature ensures that contract modifications remain organized and transparent, preventing manual entry errors and keeping billing consistent.
