While new features are typically delivered with the major releases (Wave 1 and 2) each year, there are features and enhancements that Microsoft includes in minor releases each month. Now, you have more control over when to update your Dynamics 365 Business Central SaaS (cloud) environment(s). Microsoft has introduced the ability to defer or skip minor releases and enforce major releases. Let’s explore the reasons to stay current with releases and associated risks.
Minor Releases
Minor releases include regulatory and critical improvements. Critical improvements may include “bug” fixes. Opting for Microsoft’s opportunity to defer these monthly releases may still catch up to you.
Many of the operational and functional gaps between your needs and base Business Central are now being addressed through the use of apps. Apps are typically available via Microsoft AppSource, which only supports one version of the app that is compatible with the current Business Central version. If you need a new app, you may be forced to update Business Central to the latest version first.
While deferring a minor release allows you to skip monthly validation testing, it may block you from installing a new app from Appsource. When you finally do need to update, you will have to update to each minor version that was skipped.
Localizations, which provide local language and regulatory compliance, are provided by Microsoft or partners; partner localizations are not eligible to skip the minor updates.

AI Agent & Copilot Summit NA is an AI-first event to define the opportunities, impact, and outcomes possible with Microsoft Copilot for mid-market & enterprise companies. Register now to attend AI Agent & Copilot Summit in San Diego, CA from March 17-19, 2025.
Security
The security landscape and risks are constantly changing. Remaining on an older version may expose you to additional risks that are addressed in newer versions. Accepting updates minimizes the chance for these potential risks to reach your system. Essential updates are pushed as mandatory hotfixes to make them available as quickly as possible.
Major Releases
Microsoft has policies in place that govern the release dates for both major and minor versions. Microsoft typically makes major releases available about one month before general availability. This allows you to create new environments and test your apps prior to general availability.
You need to complete your environment update to the major version within five months of general availability. There is a one-month grace period at the end. After the grace period, the update will be forced and anything blocking the update will be removed by Microsoft.
Final Thoughts
While you may opt to defer the updates, you will eventually have to deal with all of the minor updates. If you choose to defer the updates, then you may not be able to install a new app or undertake a new Business Central project until you are current. It is very helpful to build a testing checklist, which can range from a list of checks to fully automated testing to ensure that all key activities are functional.
