The Power Platform 2024 Release Wave 2 updates are out! These release lists come out twice a year with features that will be coming to the platform. Wave 2 consists of features to be released from October 2024 through March 2025. I will be doing a series of blogs to cover the top features across the Power Platform.

Today, we are talking about Dataverse!

Microsoft Dataverse offers a host of benefits for organizations. It serves as a centralized, consistent database that underpins various Microsoft applications, including Dynamics 365. Here are the key advantages:

  1. Simplified Data Management: Dataverse simplifies data handling by storing both data and metadata in cloud storage systems. This convenience streamlines data management for your apps.
  2. Compatibility with Power Apps: Dataverse seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Power Apps, allowing you to build powerful apps with ease. Whether you’re a knowledge worker or a professional developer, Dataverse empowers you to work efficiently.
  3. Productivity Tools: Dataverse provides visual designers to create, edit, and interact with data. You can define tables, relationships, business rules, forms, and workflows—all representing your business—without extensive coding.
  4. Global Availability and Security: Since Dataverse is built on Azure, it’s globally available, compliant, scalable, and secure. These benefits apply not only to custom apps but also to first-party apps like Dynamics 365 Sales and Customer Service. So, regardless of your app’s purpose, Dataverse ensures agility, insights, and robust data management!

Accelerate Value with Better Email Validation

The new feature in Microsoft Dataverse enhances email validation for model-driven apps and canvas apps. When makers create an email column type, automatic validation guides end-users to input better email data. Leveraging the smarter data layer, this feature ensures data quality and accuracy.

Bypass Business Logic for Hassle Free Migration

The upcoming feature allows IT admins, makers, or developers to bypass plug-ins at the request level during migration. By enabling this capability, you can swiftly migrate data without dealing with workflow execution. The planned capabilities include easy configuration options, bypassing specific plug-in steps, and introducing a new privilege for bypassing Microsoft plug-ins.

Enable Management of Plug-Ins in Microsoft Copilot Studio

The new feature in Microsoft Copilot Studio enables centralized management of plug-ins for both Microsoft Copilots and custom copilots. Admins can control extensibility, enriching the user experience for Copilot for Sales and other vertical copilots. They can browse and enable/disable plug-ins, ensuring governance and flexibility.

Standardize Security Role and System Application Docs

The new feature standardizes Microsoft Dataverse security role and system application documentation. Users, admins, and non-admins can easily access information about security roles and privileges online. Copilot in Bing allows inquiries about system application users and their roles. This consistency streamlines understanding and accessibility, reducing the need for local admin involvement.

Build Faster with Power Platform Catalog Enhancements

The new enhancements to the Power Platform catalog allow customers to publish and acquire organization-specific templates beyond Power Apps and Power Automate. With embedded experiences in Copilot Studio and Power Pages, users can access useful templates while authoring and managing AI components. Usability updates include ratings and reviews for catalog items, and improved issue detection and remediation. These enhancements streamline the catalog experience, making it easier to build faster!

Conclusion

That’s all for today’s quick review of some of the new features coming in the Power Platform 2024 Release Wave 2. Remember to test these items in a Sandbox before they are rolled out to your production environment! Also be sure to use the Release Planner to highlight the features you care about the most and monitor their release dates!
