In 2024, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) has added artificial intelligence (AI) to its list of top 10 priorities for state CIOs. This marks the first time AI has made the list, reflecting the growing importance of AI legislation in state and local governments. In 2023, 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia introduced AI-related bills. Governors and municipalities, including those in California, Virginia, and New York City, have also issued policies to manage and explore AI.
AI is already making an impact in areas like wildfire management, traffic control, and productivity improvement. However, there are risks, such as legal disputes and technology misuse. The NASCIO and McKinsey & Company report highlights the need for scaling AI initiatives carefully as well as introducing AI legislation to maximize benefits while managing risks effectively.
