Microsoft Copilot offers a generative AI assistant for data quality. This is arguably one of my favorite applications of the tool. In this post, we will review how the tool works and how to enable it.
Copilot can prepare a “Data prep report,” which is an AI-generated summary report of data quality. In addition to generating insights and recommendations to fix any data quality, it also provides a data quality grade, which is a score that measures the overall data quality of existing data analyzed. This score can be tracked and evaluated overtime.

The “Data prep report” will show and identify data quality issues, such as missing values, duplicates, outliers, and inconsistencies.
Here are some examples of how Copilot can assist with each data quality attribute:
- Consistency: Copilot can detect and correct inconsistent data formats, such as date, time, currency, and units of measurement. For example, if your data contains dates in different formats, such as MM/DD/YYYY and DD/MM/YYYY, Copilot can suggest a standard format for all dates and help you apply it to your data.
- Accuracy: Copilot can identify and remove inaccurate data values, such as typos, spelling errors, and incorrect calculations.
- Completeness: Copilot can also detect and fill in missing data values, such as nulls, blanks, and zeros. For example, if your data contains customer email addresses with missing values, Copilot can suggest possible email addresses based on the customer’s name and domain and help you populate your data.
- Auditability: Copilot can track and record the changes made to your data, such as additions, deletions, and modifications.
- Orderliness: Copilot can sort and organize your data, such as arranging rows and columns, grouping and aggregating data, and creating hierarchies and relationships. For example, if your data contains customer transactions with different product categories, Copilot can help you create a hierarchy of product categories and subcategories and help you analyze your data by different levels of granularity.
- Uniqueness: Copilot can identify and eliminate duplicate data records, such as customers with multiple entries, products with different names, and transactions with identical values.
- Timeliness: Copilot can ensure that your data is up to date and relevant, such as refreshing data sources, applying filters and conditions, and scheduling data updates.
By using Microsoft Copilot, users can improve their data quality and get better insights into their customers and businesses.
How to Enable Copilot for Data Quality
To enable Copilot to produce these reports and summaries, you need to have a Customer Insights – Data license and connect your data sources to Customer Insights. You also need to enable the Copilot feature in the Settings page in Customer Insights. Once you enable Copilot, it will automatically analyze your data and generate the reports and summaries for you. You can also refresh the reports and summaries manually by clicking the Refresh button on the Home page or the Data page.
To activate Copilot for data quality and be able to access Data prep report, environment status summary, and data quality alerts, you need to have a license for Microsoft 365 Copilot and a license for Customer Insights – Data.
Final Thoughts
Data quality is maybe the biggest challenge in the digital era, and it is everybody’s responsibility. Now with Copilot, business leaders and decision-makers can actively play a role in stewarding the most valuable, non-financial asset that any organization has: high quality data.
