Microsoft Fabric UG

If you work with Microsoft Fabric, you may be aware that you are responsible for all of the data that’s hosted in the cloud, which could have many implications for users. As a user of the cloud and based on its “shared responsibility” model, you are responsible for data security, access management, end-point management, data breaches, compliance, and data loss. This may sound scary at first glance, but this is the day-to-day of any IT department.

Without considering the cybersecurity aspect, let’s imagine a more mundane scenario. Are any employees or consultants moving internal data from corporate domains to personal domains? Similarly, has a terminated employee moved corporate files to a personal email address or their personal cloud drive?

There is a phenomenal tool inside Microsoft Purview called eDiscovery, which allows users to answer these questions and ensure data is secure in the cloud.

What Is eDiscovery?

Electronic discovery, commonly known as eDiscovery, refers to the process of identifying and delivering electronic information that can serve as evidence in legal proceedings or internal investigations of any kind, such as compliance.

Within Microsoft Purview, you have access to eDiscovery tools that allow you to search for content across various platforms, including Exchange Online, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint Online, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft 365 Groups, among others. It is possible to search both mailboxes and sites simultaneously and export the search results in a structured manner.

Here are the key features of the different eDiscovery solutions available in Microsoft Purview:

  1. Content Search: This tool allows you to search for content across Microsoft 365 data sources and export the search results to your local computer.
  2. eDiscovery (Standard): Building upon the basic search and export functionality of Content Search, eDiscovery (Standard) enables you to create eDiscovery cases and assign eDiscovery managers to specific cases. These managers can access only the cases they are associated with. Additionally, eDiscovery (Standard) allows you to associate searches and exports with a case and place eDiscovery holds on relevant content locations.
  3. eDiscovery (Premium): The eDiscovery (Premium) solution enhances the capabilities of eDiscovery (Standard). It provides an end-to-end workflow for identifying, preserving, collecting, reviewing, analyzing, and exporting content relevant to internal and external investigations. Legal teams can manage custodians and utilize advanced features such as predictive coding models, analytics, and more.

Here is a quick comparison feature of eDiscovery:

Final Thoughts

Organizations face many challenges when managing data and a wide range of resources, especially human resources. It is important to anticipate risks by promoting education and implementing security measures within the organization. Also, anticipate when something will happen, and use the right tool for the right job. Consider eDiscovery to anticipate and mitigate any data breach or make sure that internal policies are implemented correctly.
